How to Turn a 1 Bedroom Apartment Into a 2 Bedroom Apartment - Do It Yourself
Note: See answers to FAQ below.
A one bedroom apartment is converted into a two bedroom apartment, using a temporary "Floating Room Divider" designed and constructed by Andy Thompson (www.andythompson.ca). Construction assisted by Kryshan Randel (www.kryshanrandel.com).
Construction Details
In order to adhere to residential tenancy laws (and reassure the management) this structure is "temporary". It is not screwed, nailed or bolted into the existing structure. Instead, it was "wedged in" using vertical pressure from strategic lengths of lumber. Foam and plastic were attached to the 2x4s that touched the walls, ceiling and floor.
There were some special factors that made turning this one-bedroom apartment into a two-bedroom apartment possible: (1) the carpeted floors with underlay allowed the 2x4s to be secured by "wedging" them in vertically, and (2) it's an 800 sq. foot apartment with a solarium (seen on the left of the screen), as well as a huge living / dining room that could afford to be a bit smaller to allow for the new additional bedroom to be built from the solarium area.
The wall is wired internally with HDMI ports and cabling for a video projector, as well as a "temporary" power outlet (courtesy of Adam Weidl of Weidl's Wiring).

FAQ
(1) What's the layout of the apartment?
Answer: Good question! We had a schematic but the link is now dead! We will see if we can locate that and if we can we will add the link here. Keep checking back.
(2) How much did it cost?
Answer: Around $1,200 (Cdn), which included HDMI wiring within the wall and electrical (considered "temporary" by our electrician friend; basically the wall itself plugged in!)
(3) How long did it take?
Answer: About a week (part-time).
(4) Why didn't you show us the entire room?
Answer: Um... we realize that would have been useful. We were just making a fun movie as we did a home reno. Hindsight! Sorry about that!

You don’t need to put insulation on a wall that’s inside the house it only goes on the outside of the house or on the wall that is basically outside if you tear down interior walls don’t use it

Without further explanation, you made a foyer, not a bedroom. At least that's how I see it _ all you did was enclose the front door. Also, this method does not work for rental properties.

This was a rental. More information is in the video's description. Also, that was not a front door; it was a door to a small studio office. Weird, we know! But it worked!

It was pressure-fitted (no nails or other fasteners).

Just make your living room a bedroom and stop having so many low key enemies at your crib. Start having cook outs and go outside to meet up with fam and friends, cause you don't need their toxins and germs in your crib any way. The house is for sleeping not having parties at. You want to have a party, go to a park. ,🤣

Thanks for the video....What sort of foam and plastic did you add to buffer the studs to the ceiling walls and floor?

    • @awesomeheadquarters
      @awesomeheadquarters 2 роки тому

We used a high-density foam that comes in rolls. It's translucent... um... Sorry, I'm not a professional carpenter! I think it was polyethylene foam. It comes in the width of a 2x4 (3.5" wide).

It's technically "temporary" and floating; it's not attached by any nail or other type of fastener.

Does anyone else think that the layout is awkward??? The front door automatically leads into the “second bedroom” and then you have to walk through another door after that just to be fully inside the common areas of the house. It just doesn’t seem practical or logical. What if someone is naked and you walk through your front door and then your automatically in someone else’s bedroom.... AWKWARD. This is the 3rd video I’ve watched of people making their living room into a bedroom space and they all are just trash.

The new "temporary" walls were pressure-fitted first. They were solid as a rock. Then the door was simply added to the one wall. Done!
